Driving Change: Andrea’s Journey to Electric

Andrea switched to an electric vehicle to reduce emissions and rising fuel costs. With home charging and thoughtful trip planning, she’s found EV ownership practical, affordable, and sustainable.

Andrea Hull bought her first electric vehicle in 2022, a Tesla Model 3 rear-wheel drive, standard range. The decision began the year before when she and her family were seriously considering how to reduce both their environmental footprint and their rising transportation costs. With a daily commute of 50-55 minutes each way and frequent travel for her children’s sports, Andrea was logging significant mileage. This meant high emissions and yearly gas expenses between $7000 and $9000. Switching to an EV felt like both a climate conscious and economically practical choice.

Andrea charges her vehicle almost entirely at home after installing a Level 2 charger in her garage. This shifted her household power bill by roughly $900 – $1100 per year, a dramatic improvement over her previous gas costs. The transition itself was straightforward; researching models, placing the order, and getting the charger installed.

Owning an EV, Andrea explains, requires a slight mindset shift. Longer trips mean planning routes in advance and identifying reliable charging stations. Weather also plays a role; cold temperatures, wind, and heavy rain can reduce range.

Even with these challenges, Andrea is clear that the switch has been overwhelmingly worth it. For her, the EV fits seamlessly into daily life while significantly cutting emissions and saving money making it a meaningful step toward living more sustainably, so planning ahead and being mindful are key.
