For Randy and Denise Rowe, living off-grid wasn’t initially a climate-driven choice, it was a practical solution. Located five kilometres from the nearest power line, their home near Harvey Lake required an independent energy system. What began in 2008 as a modest solar setup has since evolved into a fully self-sustaining off-grid system, built gradually over nearly two decades.
Rowe’s initial system included 1,200 watts of solar power and 20 kWh of battery storage, supplemented by propane appliances to manage larger energy demands. Over time, they expanded the system—adding elevated panels to capture more sunlight, increasing capacity to 3,600 watts, and eventually scaling up to 7,200 watts with 60 kWh of battery storage. By 2020, after years of incremental upgrades and hands-on learning, his system became entirely generator-free, an uncommon achievement for off-grid homes.
Much of the project was completed independently, with Rowe researching and assembling components himself at a time when solar technology was less accessible. One of the greatest challenges was balancing energy production and storage, particularly in winter months when sunlight is limited. For Rowe, battery capacity remains the most significant barrier to wider off-grid adoption.
Despite these challenges, the system now powers a home that functions much like any other without reliance on the electrical grid. Rowe notes that advancements in solar and battery technology are making off-grid living increasingly viable, though he believes greater government support could accelerate adoption.
His experience highlights a key takeaway: off-grid living is not an all-or-nothing transition, but a process of gradual adaptation one that becomes more achievable as technology improves.
