When it comes to local energy independence, practical hands-on innovation is making a major difference. For this story, we spoke with local resident Drew Gilbert, who engineered and installed custom solar air heaters to reduce household heating demands and lower reliance on wood fuel.

Inspired by early can-solar concepts from the 1970s and 1980s, Drew built his initial prototype 15 years ago, refining the design into the aluminium-lined air heaters installed on his home today. The system operates by capturing solar thermal energy to circulate warm air directly into the living space. By overcoming early design challenges, such as preventing reverse convection during nighttime hours, Drew created an efficient, low-cost supplementary heat source built for roughly $400 per unit.

The environmental and financial returns have been substantial. The solar air heaters cut the household’s annual firewood consumption by 25% to 30%, delaying the need to start furnace fires in early autumn and offset heating demands during winter mornings. This translates to $200–$300 in annual savings, totaling thousands of dollars over eight years, while cutting household carbon emissions and helping preserve local forests.

Beyond his own home, Drew’s DIY tutorial video has garnered over 150,000 views online, sparking a ripple effect of renewable energy adoption. He highlights that solar air heating offers an accessible blueprint for rural New Brunswick, providing an effective way to prevent moisture damage in seasonal properties or assist residents in reducing heating costs.
