Rethinking the way we build our homes is opening new possibilities for sustainable living. For this story, we spoke with a local retiree Doug who alongside his wife Ines, partnered with an experienced European builder to construct a high-performance retirement home designed with over 99% recyclable components.
Located in New Brunswick, the $400,000 home challenges conventional building practices by avoiding plastic vapour barriers, synthetic foam, and traditional concrete foundations. Instead, it uses steel screw-pile footings and natural materials such as wood, steel, and dense cellulose insulation. Ten inches of cellulose in the walls provides an impressive R-45 insulation rating—more than twice the R-20 standard for conventional homes. Another striking feature is the interior “cob” walls, made from a traditional clay-and-straw mixture and finished with clay and sand to provide natural thermal mass and visual appeal.
Beyond material health, the project demonstrates financial and practical feasibility. Sourcing eco-friendly, natural building supplies locally proved simple, and the home’s high-efficiency thermal envelope qualifies for up to $9,000 in NB Power efficiency rebates.
The homeowner emphasizes that public education is the greatest barrier to broader adoption. By proving that natural, non-plastic building methods yield vastly superior energy performance at competitive construction costs, this project offers a compelling blueprint for how regional housing can shift toward non-toxic, climate-resilient architecture.
