Bruce and Anna Marie Colpitts harness the sun to heat their home, cut energy costs, and demonstrate how innovative technology can deliver lasting efficiency.

Rethinking daily energy use at home shows how simple technology can deliver long-term efficiency. Bruce and Anna Marie Colpitts have tackled home energy through their system nicknamed “Sunshine,” an exterior solar hot water arrangement built with 90 vacuum tubes across three rooftop panels, a storage tank, and a circulating pump. Designed as a drain-back system, the water returns safely to the internal storage tank whenever the pump stops, ensuring the rooftop collectors can freeze in winter with zero risk of damage. The captured heat preheats domestic hot water through a heat exchanger and powers radiant in-floor heating throughout the house.

Bruce’s passion for alternative energy began during the 1973 energy crisis, laying the groundwork for hands-on innovation. The system boasts a rated output of 5.1 kW, generating roughly 7,000 kWh of energy annually. At a residential rate of 15.84 c/kWh, this yields around $1,100 in annual utility savings. Because Bruce and Anna Marie designed, built, and maintained the setup themselves, it fully recouped its initial $6,000 investment since its 2017 installation.

Beyond the vacuum tubes, their home draws admiration for its thermal design, featuring a passive solar south-facing window wall, foot-thick walls, tight draft sealing, a well-insulated basement, and an accessible layout. While turnkey setups pose economic challenges for the average homeowner, leading them to suggest PV panels paired with a heat pump as a practical modern alternative, operating “Sunshine” for nearly a decade brings continuous satisfaction, knowing their showers and dishes are powered straight by the sun.
