Sustainable living often starts with unexpected inspiration and a willingness to learn. For this story, we spoke with a Hanwell New Brunswick family who transformed a backyard initiative into a thriving micro-livestock system centred around raising quails.

Sparked by their son’s school project and independent research, the family built a dedicated quail enclosure. Resourcefulness guided the construction process, utilizing scrap lumber, a donated door from a neighbor, and secondhand windows sourced online to keep expenses low. The resulting coop provides a secure environment that protects the birds from local wildlife while seamlessly integrating into daily family life.

Opting for quails over traditional poultry offers distinct advantages for residential settings. Quails require less square footage and generate significantly less noise pollution than chickens, making them exceptionally well suited for community environments.

Additionally, prolific egg-laying capabilities ensure a steady supply of fresh, high-value food, reinforcing household self-sufficiency and strengthening food security.
