In the pursuit of regional resiliency, sometimes the most impactful changes are found right in the foundation of our homes. For this story, we spoke with Jochen and Fran, who transformed sustainable philosophy into practice by designing and building an eco-conscious home engineered for maximum efficiency and a minimal footprint.
Built in 2019, Fran and Jochen’s home prioritizes function over form. Constructed using Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) from footings to rafters, the house integrates passive solar principles to eliminate excess energy waste. Strategic roof overhangs block harsh summer heat while inviting lower winter sun directly into the living space. An enclosed sun porch acts as a natural buffer, helping cap annual heating needs to less than one cord of wood and keeping electricity usage low enough to be fully offset by rooftop solar panels.
Beyond construction, their homestead emphasizes self-reliance and environmental stewardship. Utilizing their one-and-a-half-acre lot, the household maintains a productive garden supported by a dedicated retention pond for dry spells. To help others adopt similar practices, Jochen advocates for reinstated provincial solar subsidies and stronger policies supporting local food security.
This project demonstrates that sustainable living doesn’t require exorbitant costs; Jochen’s home was built at a price comparable to conventional construction yet yields lifetime energy savings. By sharing this residential model, the project proves that applying thoughtful design to daily living creates a blueprint for resilient, low-impact community living.
